Love the photos of the wooden trollers. Came across your website while looking for a 1965 Wahl built troller named the Lyndona. The website Halfmoon doesn’t seem to be operating, but Google had a cache, and the Lyndon was owned by Bruce Arundel. webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:http://www.halfmoon.ca/boats/boatsL.html
You wouldn’t have a photo of her by any chance? It is for a story for my website. I worked my last 25 years as the keeper on McInnes Island (central coast) and Bruce used to troll around our island a lot. Lost track of him later. Thanks, John
The Kokanee is at the Govt. dock at Port Hardy
Last known owner is Edward Gary Bolderson.
Moorage fees are owing.
It will be sold as scrap soon?
What a shame to see this piece of history go for scrap.
I would like to fix her up.
I can not buy her until the owner is contacted.
We can not find the owner?
A new article from the South Witdbey Record may hold a clue to the owner. While the names don’t match perfectly it makes one wonder. I hope that you get the boat. Let us know if and when you do.
See: http://www.southwhidbeyrecord.com/news/21582179.html
Anyone know the owner?
doesn’t sound like there is a problem . if they can sell it as scrap, you can buy her as scrap at hopefuly scrap prices.the owner of a derelect boat is leagaly obligated to dispose of the boat. by signing the ownership over to another victim the financial burden falls on the new owner, so people are only to happy to divest themselves of the liability.
perhaps even pay you to assume ownership

The Conquest was built by Esko Kayra and Ted Bings
very nice site;perhaps a page of derelect wooden boats and engines(easthope,
vivien, frisco standard etc).
there are those of us now retired with shipwrighting experience that could adopt an old wooden boat that would appreciate our ministrations. not just trollers but gill netters and river gill netters in the mid 50s my father built a very nice little gill netter for the fraser fishery(the lucky penny) as well as a lot of wooden boats over the years he just turned 90 in july of 2012.
also would like to find the lilian this was my great grandfathers boat (conrad meyer) he brought up from puget sound after the turn of the century, it was 35 feel long.
and there is the mitzy built for jens sjorensen powreed by an easthope this was not a troller but just a personal transportation boat. there are a number of skilled people out here able to adopt a relic.
Thanks for the comments Dan. The Britannia Heritage Shipyard in Steveston has rebuilt a Fraser gillnetter and a collector boat. There are a few good examples of 1950s & 60s gillnetters around. It would be great to get your aquaintences to work with Britannia to refurbish one or two.
See their web site at: http://www.britannia-hss.ca/
I just aquired an old photo of wooden trollers. I can read some of their names. Where can I find under whose name they were registered?
Hi Sally: The Transport Canada Vessel Registry has been a treasure house of info on BC vessels. The old volumes showed the builder, owners, significant changes and mortgages over the years. Years ago I used it extensively but I understand that the Harper gov’t is moving all the volumes to Ottawa from Vancouver. Perhaps someone can tell it this has happened yet. For boats that are still registered, the basic info can be found on line at: http://wwwapps.tc.gc.ca/Saf-Sec-Sur/4/vrqs-srib/m.aspx?lang=e

Has anyone seen the 42 foot Wahl boat “FAN ISLE”?
My parents owned her in the 80’s.
We used to fish her out of Port Hardy.
Nice pics!
Hi John,
The Canadian Vessel Registry ( http://wwwapps.tc.gc.ca/Saf-Sec-Sur/4/vrqs-srib/m.aspx?lang=e ) shows her built in 1961 and registered to James Donnelly of Powell River.
Alan
Just found this site………..Fan Isle is moored in the south harbour, Powell River.
Greetings John Milton,
Guess you have already made contact but I have the email address of Fan Isle owner Jim Donnelly that I can send you. I have seen the boat at Powell River.

fan isle sunk in the sooke basin back in 2010.
I want to find more photos of the 1950-60’s Trollers era, especially for the North West Coast area, specifically Haida Gwaii Trollers and Seiners that were locally built. The Haida have been excellent wooden Boat Builders, since 1940-50-60’s until rules forced them out.
I love to see some of the trollers that are posted on your site, keep it up.
My earlier book Fishing for a Living has a whole chapter on the Haida Seiners. The book was published in 1993 and is out of print but you can usually find a copy by searching the internet. It was published by Harbour Publishing.
Hello, I purchased the F/V West Foreland from Pat Forrest of Sooke, B.C., in the spring of 2010. Currentl I’m fishing her as a state registered power troller in SE Alaska. As you most likely know builder was William Grundison, 1965, and Frank Fredette was the designer. Powered by a Gardner 6LW with a Capital transmission, on my three trips through BC’s Inside Passage it seemed wherever I tied up people knew or knew of the boat. She’s solid, sound and a great troller for SE Alaska.
If you need any more info let me know.
Thanks,
Patrick McCarthy
Hi Patrick:
Thanks for the great response. That Gardner on top of a Fredette design and Grundison built makes her a real classic. I am planning a “Guest List” of boat pictures and it would be great to have some images of the West Foreland fishing in Alaska with her crew.
Regards
Alan
Alan, thanks for your interest. I’d be more than happy to forward some photos. Feel free to contact me at my email address.
Patrick
Alan, have you seen the vast photo collection by A L Yates at Vancouver city archives. He shot every new fish boat in Vancouver in 50s and 60s. Worth seeing! Craig

hi dan leclere
my grandfather Jack Wilson had the Lucky Penny. I think he bought it from your dad , I remember laying in the bunk as a kid ,admirering the wonderful workmanship that was done . It was a classic little gillnetter
Solimar, Remmem built, 1968. I am about to take it fishing in U.S., with Oregon numbers. BC fiberglass fish holds are hard on ribs, but most of the boat is sound and it ran from Port Hardy to Newport with no problems. Sloppy and foggy all the way down the Juan de Fuca Straits and US coast. Waited out a southerly in Westport for three days. Jimmie ran well. Boat bucks good. I have no idea of what it is like in a sea off the stern. Only ran with stabies out two days of seven.
Thanks for the update on the Solimar John. You’ve got yourself a good boat, but I agree those foamed and glassed holds can be hard on the frames. Send us a picture when you get her rigged and fishing. I will add your boat to the Oregon list at:

Hi Dan Leclere, Conrad Meyer is also my grandfather. Maude Meyer, my mother, was sister to Lillian Meyer. The Meyers moved to Bamfield B.C. circa 1921. I am in the process of putting together a history of the settlement of Winter Harbour. My dad’s boat the Arvilan, built by Sholberg in Cascade Harbour in 1939 is still being fished hard by Dave______? comments appreciated.
Hi Evelyn,
My dad Blondie Paulsen bought Bud North’s house in Winter Harbour in 1956, and our family lived in it there for many years, my dad died there in 1975. I left Winter Harbour in 1998, and went back later (2002) when we sold the house. Three of us brothers went up and cleaned out the house and the large tin shed. I knew Bud, Jack and Art North in long years gone by and Walt and Gwen were really close freinds and neighbours for many years.
My husband Dave Binnersley bought the Arvilan in 1986 and is still actively fishing the WCVI.
Hello Alan,
I was contacted by The Western Marine magazine to take photos of the Karen O 50 foot wooden troller by Wahls Boat Yard. It’s second owner is Mark Fredheim.
Rob Morse of the magazine bought several of my photos for publishing a story of the Karen O. The Karen O was in Prince Rupert at Fairview Docks. Check out the magazines next issue (or two) for the story. If you are interested in purchasing some of my photos of the Karen O Please email me. Thank you I enjoyed reading and seeing photos of other fishing vessels! John McDonald
NAME AMENDMENT for Rob Morris, Editor, The Western Marine magazine.
The troller “Star Ruby” is moored at Shoal Harbor Marina in Sidney, Vancouver Island. It is owned by Thor Sunde.
Thanks for the update Mark, Sidney is a good home port for a wooden boat.
I’m restoring a 1953 44′ troller into a cruizer, She was built in Langley BC. by a Louis Caseman. Was I think a 1970″s buy back. Reframed, planked and fastened in Port Townsend 2009 by Dave Thompson. Now at Point Defiance WA. Power is 6LW Gardner with 2UC Gardner gear. She’s getting a new from deck up house. She’s called VALOR.
Sounds like a great project and a deserving boat. Can you send us some pictures for display on http://www.westcoastfisherman.net ?
how do I send a pic??
E-mail it to me at alan@haig-brown.com and I will post it to my http://www.westcoastfisherman.net page.
I used to fish on the seiner Norman B & Wonderland. My uncle Marion Stansic of Gig Harbor owned them, any idea where they are now and who owns them?
Hi Greg: Stansic is a proud name in the Northwest and Alaskan fishery. There is a picture of the Wonderland on my page at:
http://www.westcoastfisherman.net/alaska/wonderland-2/
yes Stansic is a great name in the NW as is Jerkovich, Skansi,
and many more…like Johnny “wecome”Stanicih
this old troller wants to thank you for providing this first rate archive of stunning boat pics. You did a fantastic job as well as a fantastic service for sharing them.
Hi Slim: you might want to check out my web page: http://www.westcoastfisherman.net

Regarding Viking Magic — she is currently up for sale in Seattle. Pacific Boat Brokers has it listed as a Wahl build and there is a suggestion in the listing that the current owner is the one who purchased the boat out of Canada and did the conversion.
Thanks John, I will post a note on the facebook group West Coast Fisherman. Be good to see the boat back in BC.

Hi
Im looking for information on a boat the “Central Isle” my dad had built in 1962 at Sather Boat Works. I cannot track down any recent owners and the the “registry is closed”. What does that mean, the boat no longer exists? Are there other sources to try?
Thanks
Norm Bader
Re:Central Isle. I think it was renamed Oban , hit the Victoria breakwater, sunk, and was refloated by Peter London and his son. Paul Taylor owned it, and his wife Sylvia wrote a book, Fisher Queen, based on fishing on the boat.

We should be able to find something on that boat. Could you also post your question to the Facebook group West Coast Fisherman There are many knowledgeable people there.
My wife and I bought a wood troller, the Jessie A from Ken Frost in Gold River about 5 years ago and presently keep it in Nanaimo. Most of the fishing equipment had been removed and we have done nothing else to it apart from routine maintenance. We did remove the Loran and the old drum type depth sounder, but apart from that it is as we got her. It is powered by a Detroit Diesel 453 and was built in Port Hardy in the early 60’s. I will add more details (builder, year etc) when I next retrieve that info from the boat. Ken Frost owned the boat most of the last 30 years and used it to fish regularly on the west coast of the island. We use it for pleasure only and will leave shortly for a month long trip up to Rivers Inlet.
Please post a picture to our Facebook group West Coast Fisherman.
Please post a picture to our Facebook group West Coast Fisherman and ask any quiestions that you have about your boats history as there are very knowledgeable people there.
My partner and I are fixing up the ‘Little Stormer’ a 1947 40 ft wahl woody. If u havecome across any of her history we would love to hear it as many records were lost with the death of the last owner. She is a Campbell river boat and I think was initially designed to be a tug.
Hi Alan…just wondering if you or any of your readers have a photo of the troller “Spring Mist” which was operated by Carey Myers; mostly along West coast of Vancouver Island (1960’s era)?
Hi I am looking for information on a little trolled that was built in Ocean Falls and was named Clara B. Paul Hoilund (my dad) owned it for a few years in the 80’s and I would love to find some photos’ of her if possible.
Just picked up “Liberty” , a 32′ wood gulf troller built 1947 . My folks fished this boat in the late 70s and I hope to sport fish and enjoy this old boat for the next while. Any info appreciated.
